The Ambassadors Girls Scholarship Program (AGSP)
The Ambassadors Girls Scholarship Program (AGSP) is one of the currently undergoing projects by TDA.  TDA was awarded to implement this program by the Academy for Educational Development (AED). The program was launched on the 2005/06 academic year in two secondary schools, namely Yemane and Rama, Two years later the program was expanded to other two primary schools of Fekada and Rama in the same woredas. These four target schools are located in Gulomekheda and Mereb Lekhe woredas of the Tigray National Regional State. A total of 240 beneficiaries have been addressed beginning from the inception of the program. The overall and specific objectives of the project are;
General Objective
The general objective/goal of the Program is to ensure quality and equity of education through the provision of important scholarship supplies and mentoring services.
Specific Objectives
·         To address the financial and material needs of the recipients
·         To enhance recipients’ confidence and self esteem through the provision of mentoring services  
·         To increase beneficiaries awareness on HIV/AIDS  
·         To mitigate girls' dropouts and enable them complete secondary school education successfully
 
To achieve the aforementioned project objectives AGSP supports beneficiary students and target schools with scholarship supplies, mentoring services and HIV/AIDS awareness creation and prevention sessions.
 
Scholarship supplies
The scholarship supplies constitute the highest share of the activities and budget of the project. Currently there are 46 female and 65 male beneficiaries in the four target schools namely Rama Secondary School, Yemane Secondary School, Fekada Complete Primary School and Rama Complete Primary School. The scholarship items supplied to the beneficiaries include:
Items bought for program period (three-four years usage)
  • Scientific Calculators per beneficiary girl
  • Oxford Dictionaries per beneficiary girl
  • Different text books  for group usage
  • One mathematical set per beneficiary student
  • School bags per beneficiary student
  • House utensils (plastic barrels, cooking pots & dishes) are bought and distributed to the girls’ group
  • One mattress  per beneficiary student
 
Items purchased for annual use are
  • One bed sheet per beneficiary student
  • At least two to three uniforms/casual clothes per year per beneficiary
  • At least a pair of shoes per year per beneficiary
 
The recipients have also received the following items on monthly basis for the last four academic year s
  • Two pens per month per beneficiary
  • Detergents (Two soaps and two OMO per month per beneficiary)
  • One tissue paper per month per beneficiary
  • One Sanitary pad per month per beneficiary girl
The recipients have also received the following items on monthly basis beginning from last academic year
 
  • All male beneficiaries are getting feeding program ( 100 birr/month from December to mid March and 150 birr/month from mid March to June 2009)
  • All female beneficiaries are getting feeding program ( 150 birr/month from December to mid March and 250 birr/month from mid March to June 2009)
  • All, except few, girls are living in the communal lodging rented by the AGSP
  •  All girls are also supported by hired house maids  
 
Mentoring Services
There are four mentors who take care and advice the students in the four schools. The four mentors have been delivering the mentoring services for the last four academic years. The beneficiary students are getting such a service at weekly basis on convenient times/places for the mentors and the students as well. Individual counseling and peer mentoring are also included here. Personal and Environmental Hygiene, Reproductive health, HIV/AIDS, socio-cultural barriers that impede girls' education, harmful traditional practices, methodologies of studying, personal esteem and self confidence development,  women and leadership were the main areas of discussion themes between the mentors and the students. TDA has distributed the mentoring manual which was developed by AED. 
 
Anti-HIV/AIDS
The four Anti-HIV/AIDS clubs in the target schools have been giving HIV/AIDS awareness creation sessions to the school community at large. The clubs have delivered the messages through dramas, poems, music, open discussions and experience sharing tours. Being members of the clubs, all AGSP recipients have actively participated in the activities of Anti-HIV/AIDS clubs. The Anti-HIV/AIDS clubs have also got support from the AGSP project.
