TDA has been registered and licensed by the FDRE, Ministry of Justice Charities and Societies Agency as an Ethiopian Residents Charity in accordance with the Charities and Societies Proclamation No 621/2009 article 111(2) with the registration No 0462. A new by law persuant to the criteria of the agency has been enacted.
Mission: Solicit resource from members, governmental and non-governmental organizations, supporters and other sources and enhancing active community participation to initiate and sufficiently work on demand-driven development programs in the areas of education, health, skill/vocational training and good governance specifically where the government lacks capacity to act up on.
Major values: Community participation, transparency, efficiency and effectiveness, Equity and fairness, accountability, gender sensitive, rule of law and responsiveness.
TDA’s strategic objectives: ·
· To build the capacity of secondary schools and improve the quality of secondary education in the region,
· To expand and strengthen Non-formal Adult Education so that the people will be able to struggle against poverty more energetically,
· To enhance the quality of Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) of the region so that the mission of the program will be successful,
· To improve the service quality of health establishments through the provision of medical equipment, chemicals, and drugs primarily obtained from partners and supporters residing out of Ethiopia,
· To promote good governance to achieve healthy development,
· To support the Youth and Sports Affairs of the region in order to encourage and enhance new job opportunities, and
· To develop and promote the Tourism Opportunities of Tigrai Region.
TDA follows Three Levels of Audit Systems:
The audit committee of the General Assembly, the internal audit, and the internationally accredited external accounting firms. These bodies audit the financial handling and monitor its overall performance against the procedures and guidelines maintained in the manuals of the organization.
MAJOR AREAS OF INTERVENTION
Education: So far, TDA has constructed 121 primary schools excluding telethon schools , provided grant to 750 primary schools to implement school improvement plans; rehabilitated sixteen war-affected primary schools, conducted school feeding programs that benefited more than 32,000 children in 80 drought-affected schools. It has been implementing BESO I and BESO II projects in cooperation with USAID for the last 10 years. These two projects benefited 1,000 primary schools.
To improve the quality of education in secondary schools, 14 schools were supplied with equipment, chemicals and books, tutorial programs were executed to benefit all the junior and secondary schools in the region. A special high school for gifted students was established in Mekelle and is still financed by TDA.
It also constructed and strengthened eleven public libraries, conducted prize award programs to encourage healthy academic competition in secondary schools and Functional Adult Literacy pilot program for about 9,000 illiterates.
Health: TDA constructed over 70 different types of health establishments, trained 992 Traditional Birth Attendants and Community Based Reproductive Health Agents.
Now it is conducting Reproductive Health and Family Planning Programs in addition to the prevention and controlof HIV/AIDS, supply of medical equipment and drugs.
In the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS, TDA has also renovated and furnished 14 public libraries in collaboration with HAPCO. The libraries were supplied with the necessary furniture, local language books (most of them on the prevention and control of the epidemic) and computers and printers for the establishment of Internet Cafés. The youths are now browsing the internet and raising their awareness on the prevention and control of HIV/AIDS.
To alleviate the problems of food insecurity and improve household level income diversification through the promotion of on-farm and off-farm activities, TDA established two training and demonstration centers to train un employed youth in strategically selected fields of training that included basic construction, metal and wood works, carpet making, improved bee keeping, and general agricultural development and livestock production. The skill-training program benefited more than 7,000 food insecure youths and their family members.
It developed nine rural water wells, constructed ten micro dams, developed thirteen forage and vegetable seed multiplication centers and distributed 36,000 kerosene stoves to reduce deforestation.
TDA constructed two rural roads covering 62 kilometers, established a Bus Line Company consisting of 25 cross country buses in the beginning, established and made operational Circus Tigrai, football, cycling, and martial art It also established Conflict Resolution Project and conducted trauma healing, mitigation of psychosocial stress and skill development for the people affected by the Ethio-Eritrea war.
To put it in a nutshell, TDA has proved to be a community based civil society organization that managed to implement over 2,500 projects that contributed to reduce poverty and improve the way of life of the poor using the resources pooled from different sources in the last 20 years.
Current activities
Now, TDA is conducting CSPP (Community School Partnership Program) (with the assistance of USAID), which mainly focuses on involving the community in integrating education and health services in 150 primary schools. This project is going continue for the coming three years.
TDA has been conducting Girls’ Scholarship Program in 3 woredas with the assistance of AED. This is just a supply of basic educational materials for 84 girls.This project is now phased out.
TDA also runs Community Based Reproductive Health Programs in five woredas in cooperation with CRDA and Pathfinder. These projects mainly focus on Family Planning and Anti HIV/AIDS Programs.
TDA is also involved in the construction of primary schools and additional buildings for secondary schools with the funds from members’ contribution and donors’ assistance. The donors involved here are Japan Embassy in Ethiopia and A Glimmer of Hope. A Glimmer of Hope is supporting TDA in education and health.
TDA has now prepared its five-year strategic plan, which focuses mainly on the above-mentioned strategic objectives.
TDA has introduced and effectively implementing project centered development
direction, and so far over 24 new primary schools i.e.
TDA’s Program Planning and Implementation Department and its Construction Unit are responsible for the implementation, monitoring and evaluation of all projects.
TDA has conducted a very successful Telethon under the painful and provocative slogan "From Das to Class"(from makeshift to classes) and over 200 million birr was pledged.
TDA has celebrated its 20th anniversary in a very family hood,colourful and warm ceremoney in different programs in ethiopia and abroad. Among the programs where:
